Gluten-Free in GREECE!

Jan 15, 2020

This blog post is a LONG time coming, guys. This trip was months ago! However, better late than never, right…? Right. Going into this trip, I was a bit nervous. I packed tons of gluten-free goodies in my suitcase to sustain me (check out this , this and this to see all my travel essentials and tips!), in case I wasn’t able to eat anything. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t an issue.

If you read my blog post on the Dominican Republic , you probably know that I tend to go places without exactly doing my research to see if there’ll be enough for me to eat. I’d rather survive on protein bars and gluten-free mac and cheese than stop myself from seeing the world. So far, I haven’t had an issue!

Last July, my boyfriend and I flew to Milan, Italy, where my friend and her boyfriend live. We explored Verona for a day, and then all flew to Athens together. Our final destination was Naxos, but we visited Mykonos for a day as well! For anyone gluten-free (or not), I HIGHLY recommend visiting Naxos. It’s less inundated with tourists, and it’s so beautiful (and there are PLENTY of gluten-free options!). Read: Mykonos is NUTS.

Wondering about my experience? What did I eat? Keep reading!

Gluten-Free in Greece!

Naxos

Since we stayed in an apartment-style Airbnb, my boyfriend and our friends decided to load up on breakfast foods in our kitchen. This saved us some money, and gave us a quick start to our day versus seeking out a breakfast place. So, we were able to hit the beach more quickly! I found the grocery store (and even just the corner store) had plenty of gluten-free options - cereals, dairy-free milk, etc. I don’t regret it at all - and we definitely ate plenty of Greek food at lunch and dinner.

Lunch and Dinner Spots

Meze Meze

Funny story: going through my credit card analytics for 2019, “food” was one of my top categories. Not surprising, considering I have a food blog, right? SO, I clicked, and Meze Meze was the restaurant I spent the MOST money in 2019. How crazy is that?! Versus all my local restaurants I visit all the time, it’s this?

But you guys, it is so worth every penny I spent. In fact, we went BACK - twice. One week in Naxos, two dinners and one lunch at the same restaurant. We weren’t lacking on options… it’s just THAT good.

Meze’s menu isn’t labeled, but the staff is extremely knowledgable. And if they didn’t know the answer to a question, they found out! Much of their menu is gluten-free, including shrimp, seafood, and potatoes (watch for a theme here…).

If you visit Naxos, Meze Meze is a must. Go, and report back to me at annie@onebitegf.com!

Naxian Capriccio

Naxian Capriccio is along the same walk in downtown, near Meze Meze. We had dinner here one night, and their menu is fully labeled! Not only is the menu labeled gluten-free, but also vegetarian. All of their pastas and pizzas can be made gluten-free, and they taste amazing too!

Sippocampus

Sippocampus is a casual beachfront restaurant we went to a few times for lunch. We were able to leave our beach chairs for an hour or so, and walk over to Sippocampus for a quick bite to eat. It’s extremely casual, but the food tastes great.

Their menu isn’t labeled gluten-free, but your server can provide you with an extremely comprehensive allergy book. I tried both of the risottos, and they taste great! I’m not a big fan of risotto, but it saved me from leaving the beach to seek out a different meal. Bonus, the potatoes are gluten-free and they are AMAZING (seeing the trend?).

Ammos

Ammos is another one of the restaurants in the center of Naxos, with Meze and Naxian Capriccio. The menu wasn’t labeled, however, the staff was very knowledgable and had answers to all my questions. I had potatoes (ha!) and shrimp, and didn’t get sick… so that’s a plus ;)

Pizzadelia

We stumbled upon Pizzadelia on one of our last nights in Naxos. I’m going to be honest… the wait time was kind of ridiculous. However, I was running out of new gluten-free places to try and we had already decided on pizza.

For me, it was worth the wait. The upcharge for the gluten-free crust is less than 1 Euro, and they even have gluten-free beer! Note: I ordered a gluten-free beer, and couldn’t tell if it was gluten-free or gluten-removed, so my boyfriend drank it. Just be safe!

In addition to gluten-free pizza, they also have pastas. All their gluten-free foods are prepared in a separate area, and this is very clearly stated on their menu. If you’re looking for a reliable, 100% cross-contamination free option, this is your place to go.

Scirocco

Our last night in Naxos, we stumbled on Scirocco. Boy, I’m so glad we did! The waiter was extremely knowledgable and was willing to make changes for me. My friend and I REALLY wanted hummus, and he brought me a plate of vegetables so I could enjoy the hummus, even though it’s supposed to be served with pita! It was so sweet of him to offer something not on the menu so I was able to share an appetizer with my friend. Bonus, they serve this frozen limoncello at the end of your meal. Honestly the BEST thing I drank all week!

Also - the potatoes were gluten-free! Of course, we ate them :)

Drinks & Coffee

Barcode

So if you’ve ever been to Naxos, you’ve seen men on mopeds with the Barcode logo. You guys, this restaurant mass produces coffee and delivers it all around the island! Everywhere we went, people were drinking Barcode coffee. And admittedly - the coffee is very good! My boyfriend and I drank “frappe” with one sugar, which is just cold coffee… not the “frappe” you would think of in the United States.

If you’re hungry, Barcode is not the place for us, gluten-free friends! The only gluten-free menu item is fruit salad, and our first day they made me a salad - it was just okay, but I was starving after a day of travel and didn’t have the patience to wait and find something new.

Like Home

Like Home is a bar, which is two stories and absolutely crazy at night. They have craft cocktails, and they’re great! The second floor overlooks the sea and is a great place to watch the sunset.

Virtu Suites

Virtu Suites is a new, upscale hotel on the beach. Their bar is extremely aesthetically pleasing, and we stopped for an apperitivo on our way to dinner. We didn’t look at the food menu, so I couldn’t begin to tell you about gluten-free options - or what they even offer for food.

But, it’s a great place to stop for a cocktail or glass of wine! It’s along a string of similar waterfront bars, so it was relatively quiet since there are so many options.

Macao

Macao is another little restaurant/cafe on the beach. We stopped here for an apperitivo, and ended up ordering a quick snack, too! Shane and I split a Quinoa Greek Salad, and it was delicious! Great cocktails, too. Highly recommend for a drink!

The Rum Bar

A little above Meze Meze and the other waterfront restaurants in downtown, there are some bars overlooking the water. The Rum Bar is one of these! Rum is gluten-free (yay!), and it’s such a fun environment to enjoy a drink, dance - or watch others dance. They have wine, too!

Swing Cocktail Bar

Another one of those waterfront bars above downtown. Swing gets super busy, so be prepared! They have very different cocktails than other bars (think: smoking drinks and “jelly” shots). Must-see!

Fun fact, one night my boyfriend and I were here and all of a sudden the lights went out. On the whole island! We found our way home in the dark - thank god for iPhone flashlights!

Mykonos

D'Angelo Ristorante Italiano

My boyfriend and I took a ferry to Mykonos for one day of our week-long trip in Naxos. We got off the ferry hungry, I mean, hangry, and were desperately looking for a gluten-free spot. Strangely, the first few places I found on Find Me Gluten-Free were closed, or impossible to find, and we finally stumbled upon D’Angelos. Thank god… goodbye, hanger!

Their menu is labeled, and they have tons of gluten-free items! Everything from appetizers to dessert, you won’t be lost in choices here. They were super knowledgable, and even made changes for me so I could enjoy - guess… potatoes!

Breeze Cocktail Bar

When I’ve said “on the water” in all preceding restaurants and bars, it meant nothing compared to this. Picture Venice, but in Greece, okay? That’s what this area of Mykonos looks like. Literally - waves crashing, on the table in front of ours.

It was fun to sit here, enjoy a (ridiculously expensive…) cocktail, watch other tourists squeeze by, taking pictures, and trying to avoid the splash of the waves (or, falling in).

final thoughts

So, who knew Greece would be so gluten-free friendly? And also, who knew Greece was SO famous for… potatoes? Seriously, did anyone know that? Cause I did not!

Big tip! Most “Greek Salads” should be 100% safe, if you are pressed for food. This is what I had for lunch most days, delivered to my lounge chair ;) just make sure it doesn’t have any bread in it! Greek salad is VERY different in Greece… think lots of tomatoes, and huge chunks of feta. No lettuce! But so delicious.
